The Countries That Imprison The Most Foreigners [Infographic]

This article is more than 8 years old.

Which countries count the most foreigners among their prison populations? According to the Institute for Criminal Policy Research, 92 percent of all inmates in the UAE are from other countries. This should  come as little surprise given the nation's huge expatriate workforce. Out of the UAE's population of just over 9 million, about 7.8 million are expatriates while only 1.4 million are UAE nationals.

The tiny city-state of Monaco also has a large foreign population (only 21.6 percent of its population is Monegasque), something that is also reflected in its prison population where 89.7 percent of inmates come from overseas. Qatar (74.5 percent), Switzerland (73 percent) and Luxembourg (72.3 percent) round off the top-five countries that have the highest rates of foreign imprisonment. In the United States, 5.5 percent of the 2.2 million prison population is foreign.
