This week, healthcare in America was thrown into panic and uncertainty as the Republican party took their first concrete steps towards repealing and replacing Obamacare.

One of the most worrying aspects of 'Trumpcare' is the fact that some people living with pre-existing conditions (such as cancer or heart disease) might find their insurance premiums skyrocketing or have their healthcare denied all together.

Included in this group are rape survivors.

Before Obamacare, it was possible for healthcare providers to discriminate on the grounds on pre-existing conditions. Under Obama, that changed and the new law prohibited employers from denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.

The new American Health Care Act, known as "Trumpcare" has an amendment which allows states to opt out of protections for pre-existing conditions - which includes rape and sexual assault.

Taylor Hirth, 31 form Missouri, is a rape survivor. She's shared her story via Mic, discussing in quite upsetting detail how a man attacked and violated her in the same bed as her daughter.

In the video, Hirth says "One of my attackers is in prison, and he gets access to heath care," adding that when he's released from prison, he'll "still have access to the health care he's barred me from" because "being a rapist isn't a pre-existing condition, but apparently being raped is."

I will tell Trump I intend to resist. I will not go quietly. I am not damaged goods. Neither is any other survivor out there. We deserve healthcare just as much as the prisoners and the criminals that hurt us.

If you want to stand with the survivors, you need to get loud, you definitely need to stand with the senators, they are the last line of defence right now between Donald Trump's pen and that bill - and that bill cannot become law.

Hirth goes on to discuss her fears that she and her two-year-old daughter, who witnessed the attack, might lose access to their therapy, adding that she's "hanging on by a thread as it is".
