Suspect in Texas church shooting escaped from mental health facility in 2012: report

Devin Patrick Kelley, the suspect accused by police of gunning down 26 people inside a church outside San Antonio, reportedly escaped from a mental health facility in 2012.

The Washington Post reports Kelley escaped from the facility after he was caught sneaking guns onto an Air Force base and "attempting to carry out death threats" made against military superiors, according to a police report.

Kelley, who was 21 at the time, was committed to a mental health facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, but at some point escaped and was later found by police at a bus station in downtown El Paso in June 2012.

Among the victims in the shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs was a man from Beaver County.

Witnesses also said Kelley went aisle to aisle looking for victims and shot crying babies at point-blank range.
