Actresses to wear black at awards to protest sexual harassment

Multiple top Hollywood actresses will attend the Golden Globes next month dressed in black to protest the film and television industry’s culture of sexual harassment, People Magazine reports.

The rumored list of actresses who will join the protest reportedly includes multiple hosts and nominees. Some sources said that while it could begin at the Jan. 7 award show, the protest could continue throughout awards season.

“All female actresses attending the Globes are protesting by just wearing black gowns,” one source said.

Hollywood has been rocked by allegations of sexual assault and harassment since an initial New York Times investigation in October revealed multiple accusations of misconduct against film mogul Harvey Weinstein. Since the initial Weinstein story, other top names in the industry including actors Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Jeffrey Tambor and others have come out in a national conversation about sexual harassment and sexism.

Many actresses have been vocal about their own experiences of sexual harassment or assault, joining the national “#MeToo” movement exposing incidents of sexual misconduct.

On Wednesday, actress Salma Hayek became the latest woman to accuse Weinstein of assault, calling him “my monster” in a New York Times op-ed.

“When so many women came forward to describe what Harvey had done to them, I had to confront my cowardice and humbly accept that my story, as important as it was to me, was nothing but a drop in an ocean of sorrow and confusion,” Hayek wrote Wednesday.

“I felt that by now nobody would care about my pain — maybe this was an effect of the many times I was told, especially by Harvey, that I was nobody,” she wrote.
