Expats in Mumbai are earning highest globally, a survey conducted by HSBC revealed. The survey revealed that expats are attracted to India more than the rest of Asia Pacific.

The latest HSBC Expat survey ranked India's financial capital India at the top, when it comes to expat salaries.

According to the survey, foreigners moving to Mumbai reported average annual earnings of $217,165, which is more than double the global expat average of $99,903, a Bloomberg report stated.

The HSBC survey, based on responses from over 27,500 expats from 159 countries and territories, covered 52 cities across the globe. Surprisingly, the city pipped leading Asian destinations like Shanghai (ranking 4th), Jakarta (8) and Hong Kong (9) to the top slot.

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur did not even make it to the top 15 rankings.

Talking about Europe, two cities made to the list. Zurich and Geneva — are among the top rank nations for expat salaries, the HSBS survey said.

Zurich reported the third highest expat salaries while Geneva stands at five. It is also to be noted that Zurich is also the home to renowned banks including Credit Suisse Group AG and UBS Group AG.

Over half of Zurich expats reported that they are living in a better dwelling than they did at home even with the Swiss city’s expensive rental and property markets.

And while Berlin and Prague rank toward the bottom of HSBC’s list of 52, the majority of expats in those cities said the cost of living is affordable.

According to the country report on the Expat Explorer's official website (expatexplorer.hsbc.com), expats in India report high levels of confidence in the local economy - 71% compared with 53% globally - "against a backdrop of extensive economic reforms". India has also "leapt up the global rankings for professional development".
