Will Netflix conquer film as deftly as it has television? Kicking off this year’s awards season, tomorrow night’s 77th Annual Golden Globes will be the first big test. With Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story in contention for Best Drama, the streamer has a better-than-average shot.
While the Golden Globes set the tone for the rest of awards season, the television side trails the Emmys. Expect another win for Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s universally beloved second season of Fleabag. However, with Game of Thrones’ final season (rightfully) snubbed from the Best Drama category, we could be in for a surprise. And, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves nothing more than to keep the industry on its toes.
As for films in the running, Netflix has three of the five up for Best Drama, the category many consider the biggest accolade of the night. So, will the streamer come out on top? The odds are very good.
BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
The Irishman
Marriage Story
1917
Joker
The Two Popes
Originally, The Irishman was thought to be a shoo-in with its star-studded cast, which includes Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. Netflix certainly put money into this one with a reported budget of over $140 million.
However, The Irishman could be defeated by Netflix’s other contender, Marriage Story, which has gotten not only rave reviews, but garnered the most nominations with a total of six.
Frontrunner: The Irishman
Dark Horse: Marriage Story
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
Cynthia Erivo - Harriet
Scarlett Johansson - Marriage Story
Saoirse Ronan - Little Women
Charlize Theron - Bombshell
Renée Zellweger – Judy
Early bets were certainly on Zellweger for her strong portrayal of Judy Garland but again, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story came out strong to such critical praise that it won’t be a shocker if Johansson swoops in and grabs the win.
Frontrunner: Zellweger
Dark Horse: Johansson
BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
Christian Bale - Ford v Ferrari
Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory
Adam Driver - Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes
This will likely be between Driver and Phoenix, both incredible actors. Driver has proven himself a worthy adversary to Phoenix but again, Marriage Story was a shocker that came out without a lot of fanfare and blew critics and fans away with some of the most compelling performances of the year. Phoenix, however, has been nominated six times with a Golden Globe win for Walk the Line and he’s received a lot of praise for his performance in Joker. This might be the hardest one to predict and truly both deserve the win but if I were a betting woman, my money would be on Driver.
Frontrunner: Driver
Dark Horse: Phoenix
BEST MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Dolemite Is My Name
Jojo Rabbit
Knives Out
Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood
Rocketman
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is the favorite. This star-studded affair with Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie is tailor made for the Golden Globes. Then again, the HFPA loves a good rock n’ roll biopic.
Frontrunner: Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood
Dark Horse: Rocketman
BEST ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Ana de Armas - Knives Out
Awkwafina - The Farewell
Cate Blanchett - Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Beanie Feldstein - Booksmart
Emma Thompson - Late Night
There’s been some serious Oscar buzz swirling around Awkwafina for her stellar performance in The Farewell and despite of (or perhaps thanks to?) her snub by the Screen Actors Guild, she could walk away with the award. A possible surprise? Feldstein, who won acclaim for her turn in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart.
Frontrunner: Awkwafina
Dark Horse: Feldstein
BEST ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Daniel Craig - Knives Out
Roman Griffin Davis - Jojo Rabbit
Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood
Taron Egerton - Rocketman
Eddie Murphy - Dolemite Is My Name
The HFPA loves Leo – they have nominated him 11 times before, and awarded him the Globe three times. Still, Dolemite has been hailed as Eddie Murphy’s comeback and Egerton’s star-turning portrayal of Elton John has had everyone in Hollywood talking. This category is looking like the biggest toss-up of the night.
Frontrunner: DiCaprio
Dark Horse: Egerton
BEST MOTION PICTURE, FOREIGN LANGUAGE
The Farewell (USA)
Les Misérables (France)
Pain and Glory (Spain)
Parasite (South Korea)
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France)
Rarely is there a foreign film that gets as much buzz as Parasite has. If it does not snag this award, it will be one of the biggest shocks of the evening. Even so, The Farewell stands a chance.
Frontrunner: Parasite
Dark Horse: The Farewell
As for the television side, I think we can all agree TV has never been better. Which series will win the night?
BEST TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
Big Little Lies - HBO
The Crown - Netflix
Killing Eve - BBC America
The Morning Show - Apple TV+
Succession – HBO
Even with Game of Thrones out of the picture, HBO could still walk away with the best drama series. Succession was by far the buzziest of the nominated shows, and deservedly won praise from audiences and critics alike. Don’t sleep on The Crown, though — it took home the award in 2017 and could reign again.
Frontrunner: Succession
Dark Horse: The Crown
BEST ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
Jennifer Aniston - The Morning Show
Olivia Colman - The Crown
Jodie Comer - Killing Eve
Nicole Kidman - Big Little Lies
Reese Witherspoon - The Morning Show
Despite The Morning Show’s mixed reviews, Aniston’s performance was a standout. She is by and large considered to be the favorite. Still, she is up against her royal highness Olivia Colman, who can do no wrong.
Frontrunner: Aniston
Dark Horse: Colman
BEST ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
Brian Cox - Succession
Kit Harington - Game of Thrones
Rami Malek - Mr. Robot
Tobias Menzies - The Crown
Billy Porter – Pose
This will be a tight battle between Porter, who won the Emmy for his critically lauded role in Pose, and Cox. With Succession likely to run off with best series, Cox gets the edge.
Frontrunner: Cox
Dark Horse: Porter
BEST TELEVISION SERIES, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Barry - HBO
Fleabag - Prime Video
The Kominsky Method - Netflix
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Amazon Prime Video
The Politician – Netflix
It’s going to be Fleabag. In the unlikely event that it’s not, Amazon still wins with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which took home the award in 2018.
Frontrunner: Fleabag
Dark Horse: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
BEST ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Christina Applegate - Dead To Me
Rachel Brosnahan - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Kirsten Dunst - On Becoming A God In Central Florida
Natasha Lyonne - Russian Doll
Phoebe Waller-Bridge – Fleabag
See above. Both Fleabag and Maisel are so dependent on their lead actresses’ (stellar) performances, the actress category will likely mirror the series category.
Frontrunner: Waller-Bridge
Dark Horse: Brosnahan
BEST ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES, MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Michael Douglas - The Kominsky Method
Bill Hader - Barry
Ben Platt - The Politician
Paul Rudd - Living With Yourself
Ramy Youssef – Ramy
While Barry may not get the love it deserves from the HFPA, Hader likely will. However, Ramy Youssef, the creator and star of Hulu’s Ramy, could pull a surprise win. His show’s debut season got top review, and although it did not get a best series nomination, the HFPA has awarded buzzy, young showrunners in the past (see: Lena Dunham in 2013).
Frontrunner: Hader
Dark Horse: Youssef
We will have to wait and see who takes home the gold. The three-hour telecast, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air live on NBC Sunday, January 5 at 8:00 p.m. EST/5:00 p.m. PST.
Here is a full list of nominees.
