The Church of Scotland has taken a significant step closer to allowing same-sex marriages after a majority of presbyteries voted in favour of permitting ministers to conduct the ceremonies if they wish to.

The presbyteries were asked to vote on the subject after the Kirk drew up legislation to allow ministers to apply to become an authorised same-sex celebrant. A report to the 2022 general assembly shows that the result of the vote was 29 in favour and 12 against.

In order for the measure to be enacted into church law, it has to go before a vote at this year’s general assembly, which will take place from May 21 to 29. Although it is expected to pass, a spokesman for the church said it
