Kanungu: 22-Year-Old Remanded Over Homosexuality

A 22-year-old man was on Thursday charged and remanded by the Kanungu Grade I Magistrate court to Kanungu Government Prison over homosexuality.

The court presided over by Magistrate Athanasius Mukobi heard from prosecution that Davis Orikiriza, a businessman and resident of Katungu in Kambuga town council had carnal  knowledge with a fellow man on March 22, 2023.

Appearing before court, Orikiriza was charged with engaging in unnatural sexual act contrary to Section 145 of the Penal Code Act.

He denied the charges, as the magistrate kept asking him where he attained training in such acts.

Peter Muhendo the District Resident State Attorney asked for an adjournment saying that investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

Mukobi as such was remanded until April 6,2023.

The Ugandan parliament early March 2023 passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023 that criminalizes more Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer– LGBTQ activities.

Under this new law, people who publicly declare that they belong to the LGBTQ community face between 2-10 years imprisonment, while aggravated homosexuality fetches the highest penalty of death or life in prison.
