Footage posted on social media captured the moments before Metropolitan Police officers shot dead two dogs and Tasered a man in London.

The video showed officers pursuing a man holding the two dogs on a lead along a canal in Limehouse, east London, on Sunday.

The force said it was called after 5pm to reports of a woman being attacked by a dog and officers attended the scene.

The man was then Tasered to the ground and the animals were shot dead.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said the "aggressive behaviour of two dogs was of considerable concern and posed a significant threat to them".

It added: "A man was arrested in connection with the incident for having a dog dangerously out of control and assault offences. He has been taken into police custody.

"A Taser was discharged by police."

The force said no one was taken to hospital and both dogs were "destroyed by police at the scene".

It continued: "This is never an easy decision for any officer to take, but police have a duty to act where necessary before any further injury is caused.

"The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards will review the circumstances of the incident."
