EU calls for investigation into poisoning of school girls

The European Union (EU) has in a statement urged the Taliban to investigate the mass poisoning of nearly 80 school girls including four teachers on Sunday in the northern Sar-e-Pol province.

The statement comes following a separate statement by UNICEF on Monday which also called on the Taliban authorities to investigate the incident.

“The EU regrets the horrible news,” Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for Foreign Affairs of the EU, said about the mass poisoning Tuesday.

“This is a heinous crime that needs to be followed up by the de facto authorities, as per their obligations under international law to protect the population. We wish all affected a swift recovery.”

The statement further added that education is the universal human right of all children and schools are required to be safe places for children.

The Taliban has not commented on the incident.
