This map gives us an interesting look at what type of home most Europeans live in. The type of homes are divided into three categories: Flat (apartment), detached house and semi-detached or terraced house.

Most Europeans live in either a flat or a detached house. Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium are the only European countries where most people live in a semi-detached or terraced house. In the UK and the Netherlands, it’s even a majority of the population that lives in a semi-detached or terraced house. The Netherlands, Belgium and the UK are some of the most densely populated countries in Europe, so it makes sense that detached houses are not the most common type of home. The Netherlands is the country in Europe with the highest share of people living in a semi-detached or terraced house, 62.2%.

In most of eastern and northern Europe, a detached house is the most common type of home. In North Macedonia, 71.2% of the population lives in a detached home, the highest in all of Europe.

Flats are more common in the Baltics and southern and central Europe. 65.7% of the Spanish population lives in a flat, the highest in all of Europe.
