The Israeli military has accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of having ordered attacks by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah at Israel’s northern border amid concerns a new front could open in the confrontation between Tel Aviv and its regional foes.

"Hezbollah carried out a number of shooting attacks in order to distract from our war efforts in the south (Gaza), under Iranian instruction and with [Iranian] support," chief military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a briefing on October 16.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has moved some fighters toward the Israeli border.

The paper quoted an activist in the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor and a Syrian government adviser as saying that fighters have been redeployed from Deir ez-Zor to an area close to Syria’s capital, Damascus.

The activist said some of the redeployed military were missile experts, while the official claimed Tehran’s aim remained largely defensive.

“There is a big concern that if there was a war, there is a strong need to protect [Bashar al-Assad’s] regime,” the official said.

At least 1,300 Israelis have been killed in the Hamas surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, while dozens of soldiers and civilians are being held in Gaza as hostages. More than 1,300 Palestinians have also been killed in Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

As Israel prepares for a possible ground assault in Gaza, which is controlled by the Palestinian armed group, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that the Islamic Republic “cannot remain a spectator” in the conflict.

“If stopping the aggression against Gaza does not succeed, the expansion of the war fronts is not excluded and its possibility increases every hour,” he told Al Jazeera on October 15, according to NBC. “The continued aggression and the absence of a political solution add fuel to the fire and things may get out of control.”

Meanwhile, US national-security adviser Jake Sullivan said that there was a risk that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah or the Islamic Republic could get directly involved in the conflict.

Speaking to US broadcaster CBS News, Sullivan said that the US administration has ordered a second aircraft-carrier strike group to the region “to send a very clear message of deterrence to any state or any actor that would seek to exploit this situation.”
