Neil Young and Jack White made music history on Monday night’s episode of The Tonight Show. Using White’s recently refurbished 1940s-era Voice-o-Graph recording booth, Young performed, recorded, and pressed a cover of the Willie Nelson-penned song “Crazy” all in one take. In fact, the vinyl was played on a turntable at the end of the show.
The performance emulated Young’s recording of new album, A Letter Home. Inspired by a trip to Third Man Records during Record Store Day 2013, Young entered into the booth and recorded covers of songs by other notable singer-songwriters, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Bert Jansch, among others. A deluxe box set will be released on May 27th.
The two musicians also sat down for a brief interview during which they discussed the album’s recording process, Young’s appreciation for Springsteen, and Fallon’s spot-on impersonation of Young, among other topics.

In related news, White will release his own new album, Lazaretto, on June 10th via Third Man. This one, however, was recorded in a normal studio.
